Toby Heaps

Toby Heaps is a journalist and father with a proven record of community leadership. He founded Corporate Knights magazine more than twenty years ago, and has grown it into a publishing company with the foremost ranking for assessing sustainability at companies worldwide. He regularly offers insight to local news outlets, and his advice on responsible governance is sought by elected officials, CEOs, and even King Charles. As a former centerfielder for the Yugoslav National Team, his advice on fielding is also sought by his son’s baseball team.

Toby learned the value of public service from his mother who was a pioneering social worker and his father who served as a City of Toronto Councilor, in the tradition of his great-grandfather A.A. Heaps, an MP credited for catalyzing Canada’s Old Age Pensions Act (1927) and unemployment insurance

Born in Peterborough and raised in Calgary, Toby has built deep roots in Toronto’s Spadina-Harbourfront, where he has run his business for 20 years and now proudly lives with his three young children, his partner Sarah, and his fur family.

In 2023, Toby ran for mayor to bring attention to local issues like housing affordability, green space and making Bay Street the jobs rich green finance hub of the Western Hemisphere. He volunteers for a number of charities including serving on the board of Protect our Winters Canada, and has been recognized for contributions to the community with an honourary doctorate by TMU.
